On September 21st, 2009, the York Township Fire Department (Athens County, Ohio), was dispatched to a charter bus vs. vehicle accident with possible entrapment. Crews arrived to find a charter bus crashed into the rear of a large dump truck. Initial size-up confirmed that the driver of the bus was trapped with severe injuries, the driver of the dump truck had critical injuries, and an undermined number of the 37 college students on board the bus were injured. Ultimately additional triage determined that 11 students required treatment, all minor in nature.
Southeastern Ohio Emergency Medical Services provided initial patient care, while York Township crews started a lengthy extrication of the bus driver. Additional help was provided by the Nelsonville Fire Department, Starr Township Fire, and Hocking County EMS.
York Township crews, using Genesis Rescue Tools, spent the next 20 minutes extricating the driver of the bus, while other crews attended to the other driver and the student occupants of the bus. The extrication required multiple tools, including a mini cutter. The mini cutter was wisely used to cut windshield framing away so that crews could continue to use the main cutter to free the driver. The main extrication required cutting several pieces of two-inch framing away from around the driver, plus removal of the steering wheel. The driver had suffered a total amputation of the right leg during the accident. Air ambulance service was not available because of weather.
The driver was successfully extricated and removed to Grant Medical Center in Columbus Ohio.
